AMG EXPERT REVIEW: A major surprise, Love Not Love Lust Not Lust found Kitty Brazelton's band Dadadah moving away from the heavy avant-garde jazz influence of its first album, Rise Up!. The type of dissonance and outside improvisation that were a big part of Rise Up! are downplayed on this very conceptual sophomore effort, which is a lot easier to absorb than its predecessor. But if you're thinking that Dadadah has gone commercial and turned into Celine Dion, think again. The horn-heavy band is still experimental and challenging -- only this time, alternative rock and art rock are mixed with elements of classical and European art music instead of such a heavy dose of free jazz and avant-garde jazz. This isn't to say that Dadadah has eliminated the avant-garde jazz influence altogether -- it's still there, but it isn't nearly as prominent. Although some of Brazelton's players venture outside on occasion, the album's primary concerns are lyrics, melody and composition, not blowing. The melodies that Brazelton wrote for pieces like "Cinderella's Dream" and "Beauty Wild and Curious" are quite compelling, and her singing is as colorful as it is expressive. With Love Not Love Lust Not Lust, Dadadah moves much closer to the center without compromising its integrity a bit. -- Alex Henderson |
